The Department of Pre University Education is an independent Commissionerate which deals with 11th and 12th Grades classes collectively called Pre-University Classes in the state. All the colleges offering pre university education in the state comes under the purview of Department of Pre University Education. Pre-University Education is a link between Secondary Education and Higher Education including Professional and General Education.

The Department of Pre-University Education has threefunctions.

There are following types of PUC colleges in the state-

• Government composite Pre University Colleges,

• Government independent Pre University Colleges,

• Bifurcated Pre University Colleges,

• Private Aided Pre University Colleges,

• Private Unaided Pre University Colleges,

• Pre University Colleges maintained by Corporations

Admission Process

Students who have successfully completedKarnataka SSLC or an equivalent examination are eligible to take admission intoPUC – I i.e. 11th successfully passing PUC I students get promotedto PUC II.
